Stephen Scott Hilliard is a native of Durham who after a career as a professional musician decided in the late 1970's to attend cosmetology school.  "It seemed like a great opportunity to continue an avenue of artistic expression as well as make people feel good at the same time.....Like playing music.  For me it was a natural progression."  Shortly after finishing his course of study he opened the salon A Cut Above which he owned and operated for more than 21 years.  During his career he has studied and taken classes with such luminaries as Horst, Stephen Cole, Irvine and Rita Rusk, Paul Brocatto, Martin Parsons and John Paul Mitchell.
He also had the honor of meeting and taking classes with the legendary Paul Mitchell himself whom Steve describes as "Even with his fame and status in the hairstyling industry, one of the most genuine and humble persons I have ever met."
Steve still sings and plays occasionally, but not in the salon.
